Directing the Re/Collecting Project: An Ethnic Studies Memory Project of California's Central Coast. Our collection method is to host community events (a la Shades of LA), inviting community members to bring their recollections and private collections or story materials to be digitized. The project uses digital media to address a gap in the archives--the under-representation of the diverse communities of color in local histories--and to create a kind of crowd-sourced digital archive. Re/Co's first collection is from the Filipino American community, and focuses specifically on the complexity of love in the community that was established by the predominantly male migrant workers that came to the US in the 1920s and 1930s, when the Philippines was colony of the US. It draws upon the perspectives of the women and children of those first migrants.
